Self-defence Training

HupKwonDo emphasizes practical self-defence. While our full martial art program also features uniforms, belts, promotion exams, patterns, free sparring and other elements you would expect from a traditional martial art, we also offer classes focusing primarily on those aspects with direct self-defence applications. Click here for class information, including days and times.

From time to time we also offer special Introduction to Self-Defence workshops but we encourage interested people not to wait for a workshop: why not come and check out a regular self-defence class? The first trial class is always free.

Bear hug release All aspects of HupKwonDo are geared towards practical self-defence, but we realize that not everyone is interested in the uniforms, belt levels and other more traditional martial arts aspects of HupKwonDo. Because of this, in addition to the elements of our training which are required to advance through the HupKwonDo promotion system, we also offer special self-defence classes and workshops.

All classes include basic techniques and drills which will benefit you whether or not you are interested in working towards and beyond a black belt.

Self-defence classes and workshops focus on releases, escapes, take downs, ground techniques and other self-defence applications. Regular martial art (HupKwonDo) classes may also cover these techniques, but add HupKwonDo patterns, free sparring and other elements primarily of interest to the martial art student.

Students interested in pursuing HupKwonDo belts and certification are encouraged to attend both regular weekly classes. Students preferring to focus primarily on self-defence can limit their participation to self-defence classes and workshops, but are welcome at regular HupKwonDo classes as well. Registration is the same in either case. Your personal goals determine when and how often you attend. Only the classes or workshops you actually attend count against your declining balance of pre-paid classes.

While we offer the option to attend a single self-defence workshop, it is important to recognize that no single workshop or class can prepare you to respond appropriately and effectively to a dangerous situation. Regular training and practice are strongly recommended.

Private Classes, Workshops and Demonstrations

We also offer private classes and workshops and demonstrations. These sessions can often be arranged take place at mutually agreeable time and location and be tailored to your special requirements.
