Information on Classes

Our regular classes are open to women, men, boys and girls of all ages and levels of fitness. Family enrollment is encouraged.

Classes are on-going, not in sessions. Students may register at any time, but everyone is encouraged to participate in a free trial class before signing up. You wouldn't buy shoes without trying them on first. We think it's just as important for you to choose a martial art that fits you. That's why we encourage you to try HupKwonDo before you sign up.

We are a community based club, working from rented space rather than a commercial store front. Students benefit from a low instructor to student ratio. Being community based also means low overhead and reasonable fees, but it doesn't mean compromising quality. 5th Dan Black Belt and Chief Instructor, Gary Eikenberry has taught self-defence and martial arts in the National Capital Region since 1989. He earned his ITF International Instructor's Certificate in 1991, training with General Choi Hong Hi, President and Founder of the ITF. After joining HupKwonDo International in 1993, he was certified as an instructor by, Grand Master Lim Ching Sing, President and Founder of Hupkwondo International in 1994.

Our primary concern is the development of our students in a healthy, supportive atmosphere.

Self-defence workshops focus on releases, escapes, throws, ground techniques, grappling and other self-defence applications. HupKwonDo classes may also cover these techniques, but add HupKwonDo patterns, free sparring, power techniques and other elements primarily of interest to the martial art student. Our free training (as in unstructured) classes make instructors available to work with you on specific areas or techniques of your choice or, from time to time we may announce in advance a particular focus (such as ground techniques, throw releases, free sparring, grappling, etc.) for a specific free training class.

Students interested in pursuing HupKwonDo belts and certification are encouraged to attend both HupKwonDo classes as well as self-defence and other workshops and free training opportunities. HupKwonDo registration covers it all. Your personal goals determine when and how often you attend. Only the classes or workshops you actually attend count against your declining balance of pre-paid classes. Additional special training may be available by special arrangement.

Students preferring to focus primarily on self-defence can limit their participation to the self-defence sessions. See GO Self-Defence for more information on self-defence only membership.

COST:

While we realize that cost is always a consideration, and even though our fees are generally lower than most commercial schools, we strongly believe that price should never be the determining factor when choosing a martial arts or self-defence training program. You should visit our (or any other) club and take advantage of a trial class, open house or workshop and talk with instructors and students in an effort to determine if it meets your personal objectives and is a good fit for you and/or your child.

Our fees are based on prepaid classes. For those opting to attend both the GO HupKwonDo full martial arts program as well as self-defence sessions, one HupKwonDo registration covers both. 1 prepaid class=1 hour of training: HupKwonDo, Self-defence or free training.

Only classes you actually attend are counted against your prepaid balance.

The following pre-payment options are available:
  • 5 classes for $30 plus HST = $33.90
  • 10 classes for $50 plus HST = $56.50
  • 20 classes for $80 plus HST = $90.40
  • 40 classes for $150 plus HST = $169.50
  • Single non-prepaid classes: $10.00 plus HST = $11.30

  • Self-defence only annual membership: $48.50 plus HST = $54.80

For those interested only in self-defence training, a single annual self-defence membership fee entitles you to attend all workshops, free training and any other special events for one full year without any additional charges.

PAYMENT can be made by cash or a cheque payable to Gary Eikenberry. Alternatively, you can use the PayPal™ on-line payment system to pay with a credit card or directly from your bank account. We are unable to accept credit or debit cards when you pay in person.
Please note: Because we operate on a cost recovery basis, prices for paying by PayPal include the approximately 3% transaction fee charged by PayPal. Click here to pay by PayPal.

There is a 10% bonus for families with 2 or more members training together when prepaying 20 or 40 classes (i.e. each family member gets 22 or 44 classes when paying the regular price for 20 or 40 classes)

All prices above apply to prepaid classes for a single student. Fees are non-transferrable and non-refundable. Prepaid classes cannot be shared or transferred between students. Fees do not include annual (HupKwonDo International) membership fees (mandatory for all HupKwonDo students), equipment, private or other special lessons or promotion exams. Prepaid class credits expire if a student fails to attend class for 2 full months or more (not including summer break) unless prior special arrangements have been made.

Please note: Regular classes are not held during the months of July and August, but special training opportunities are often available. HupKwonDo students are included in self-defence program on the first Saturday of the month.
